My Evening with Simon & Garfunkel

I believe it was 1970 when my then wife and I saw Simon and Garfunkel at the Long Beach Arena. Near the end of their performance Simon announced that they were going to sing a new song that they had never sung before in public, written by Garfunkel. He apologized in advance if they messed it up. Garfunkel began to sing Bridge Over Troubled Waters. When they finished, for about 5 seconds there was not a sound in the auditorium. Then everyone sprung to their feet and applauded and shouted for what must have been five minutes. During the 5 seconds of silence, I felt it was the most beautiful pop song I had ever heard. It still gives me chills when I hear it. After the audience quieted down, Simon looked out and said, “I guess they liked it.”
